    Offered here is a seldom offered color German cigarette card of World War 1 German flying ace Baron Manfred von Richthofen (second from left in picture), also known as “The Red Baron” because of the color of his plane. The card is from the series
    Der Weltkrieg
    (The World War), issued in 1937 by a number of cigarette companies and is No. 179 in the series and has the following text on the back: “
    Manfred von Richthofen (1918). Baron von Richthofen, leader of a squadron of fighter planes of the same name, was the most successful and popular German fighter pilot of the war. He was shot down on April 21, 1918 near Vaux on the Somme River. His successor as leader of the squadron was the later Reichsmarshal G.
    The first squadron of the newly reformed air force after 1933 was named after von Richthofen.”
