    THE ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This is a fantastic find! Large sign measures 28" high & 27" at its widest point. A one of a kind folk art sign from a fairgrounds or amusement park located in upper New England & circa 1940. The sign was likely made by a local sign maker & qualifies as 20th century folk art. You can see the craftsmanship in the lettering & the scroll work. Hand painted on plywood with a hand forged metal bracket that was used to attach it to a post. 2 sided sign. Both sides feature a Mickey Mouse character without identifying the character as Mickey. The fairgrounds was using an instantly recognizable character without feeling the need to pay for the rights. One side says "Watch Time Clock For Cash Awards." The other side says "It's Great Kid." The sign was probably exposed to the elements but while outside it may have been under a pavilion roof or overhang. The sign shows wear & usage but the only real damage is a piece missing under 1 foot on 1 side & some separation in the plywood layers at the bottom edge. The painted images of Mickey are both excellent. The sign artist followed the Walt Disney model sheet for the face, the curve at the elbow, the sweep of the tail, the gloves, the shoes but deviated on the shorts giving Mickey polka dots instead of a solid color(red would have been ideal). This is a great rendering of a late 1930s Mickey that could have been painted at any time between approximately 1938 & 1950.
