    Description

This fine Japanese Meiji Period gilded black lacquer two piece dispatch or letter box is decorated with delicately gilded cherry blossoms and is bound together by means of  a heavily woven green silk band attached to the lower section of the box with silvered bales with cast cherry blossom backplates.  The box (with lid) is 9 1/2" long x 2 7/8" wide x 2" tall.  The piece came with what I thought was a bit of a whimsical description by a former owner that reads:
    Japanese lacquer box
in Cherry blossom design for Spring. To carry letters in the days of the Samurai - 18th c
.   The box is in great almost pristine condition with just a few tiny repaired chips.
