Description

Particularly fine, Meiji Period 1868-1912, gilt brass Japanese cloisonne hinged box or casket in the manner of Ota Jinnoei
dating from 1870 (exhaustively researched against other examples) to no later than 1900.
明治時代 掐絲琺瑯團花寶盒
Stunning palette of chartreuse, moss, emerald, and leaf greens, azure, turquoise, navy and cobalt blues, white, pink, grayed lavender and iron red (or cinnabar) with black with gilded cloisons. The box's frame and bracket feet are also gilt over brass.
Each of the six sides are finely enameled, the flowers (iris, chrysanthemum, prunus, lotus) are set off in a geometric theme resembling various brocades which include a stylised vase, a bowl and a 'water feature' as if in a traditional Japanese garden with walkways. It is really QUITE extraordinary.
Could stand with some minor but qualified restoration as the lid does not sit flat and the hinge is a bit wobbly and the interior shows tarnishing and normal signs of wear for a piece over 120 years.
