    Description

MAGNIFICENT ANTIQUE JAPANESE HAND ETCHED LACQUER JUBAKO ON STAND
    Meiji Period (1868-1912)
Absolutely stunning Japanese lacquerware lidded stacking boxes with sublime hand etched decoration. Deep, rich urushi black lacquer has been tastefully etched with elegant scrolling botanical patterns, traditional to the Japanese aesthetic of the Samurai period. The lid and sides of each of the five compartments are covered with artistically rendered superb minute detail, incorporating thousands of hand etched strokes. The jubako rests elegantly upon a matching lacquer stand which doubles as a handsome tray. Presents a most tasteful presence that is magnificent and bold, yet peaceful and quiet. Absolutely gorgeous example of the fine attention to detail in Japanese lacquer ware. Exhibiting the traditional elegance of the Shogun and Samurai, this stunning set of boxes is in excellent antique condition. Must have been carefully stored for generations by its fortunate owners.
Of significant size, measuring approximately 11.25" wide by 17.75" high inclusive of the stand, a very impressive masterwork. Most elegant storage boxes for desktop or dresser. An exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of fine Japanese antiques.

Quite a long process went into creating fine lacquer examples such as this one. Handsomely crafted of carefully selected wood, dried completely, cut, joined and sanded, then many layers of urushi lacquer were applied, each requiring time to dry slowly before the next was brushed on. After hand polishing, the etched design itself would have then taken scores of hours to complete by a master artisan. The intricacy is exquisite. Absolutely gorgeous antique example of the strength and presence of Japanese lacquer ware.
